Roy Maartens, UWC on Cosmological Perturbations

The very early, hot Universe was almost uniform - so how did the galaxies emerge after billions of years? Perturbation theory is how we understand this process - the origin and evolution of structure. I will give a review of perturbation theory from the ground up at a basic level. I will assume a familiarity with the main features of the Friedmann metric, and with simple tensor calculus. Notes will be available.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE THIRD AND FINAL LECTURE OF THIS SERIES WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY 22ND MARCH 2011 IN ROOM M111 AT 3PM-5PM.
